Since 2018 the Portland Cannabis Tasting Society has been meeting together with friends old and new to share, enjoy, destigmatize, learn about and taste cannabis. We have always come together in a low key vibe, free of the snobbishness many people expect from a connoisseur society.
We’re weed connoisseurs but that jazz cabbage is for everybody who wants it. It’s a democratic herb, so much so that you don’t have to buy it from some far off distant paradise like saffron or vanilla, you can buy it from a local organic farmer, through a locally owned dispensary, and you can even grow it yourself.
In fact my tasting society (Hi I’m Fumidor!) has always been centered around home growers, partly because I am a home grower but also partly because home growers are usually the most motivated cultivators. They need the herb they produce as medicine for themselves or often ailing family members, and they can’t afford for it to be sub par, ineffective or poor value for their money. So when our friends share some of their lovingly homegrown herb, I can tell you from deep and hazy experience that it’s memorable, tasty and makes you feel different.
Cannabis is an herb that will heal many people who’ve never even experienced it before and it will continue to heal many of us who have been yelling our hearts out for years about the many benefits of ganja. How many fights do you see at a cannabis friendly event? How many in contrast to you see at a normal event where folks are drinking beer? Contrary to many of our cultural preconceptions, cannabis has the power to change and yes empower people to step into a new path and find new light in their life. Whether it’s an escape from pain or a mental reawakening through introspection, or even just a pleasant relief from a busy and stressful day, cannabis has the power to make life better.
Unfortunately the wonderful variety of cannabis also means there’s a dizzying variety of cannabis strains, individual chemotypes phenotypes genotypes, varietals cultivars, chemovars and samovars (mmmm tea) within those strains, different processes that lead to different terpenes, potencies clarities and effects, and that’s not even to mention the variety of farming techniques or even the fact that each human responds differently to the same cannabis. It is an absolute whirlwind and without a life raft you can get swept away in marketing hype, poor information and lowest common denominator sales tactics. How often do you hear that the highest THC percentage by test is the biggest seller? How often has that been your go to purchase? Tune into the Portland Cannabis Tasting Society, we can show you through puffing the finest herb that money can’t even buy that there’s a better way. Just watch, and in time I think you’ll agree.
We don’t preach, we teach. Each of us has our own experience, our own levels of understanding whether it’s cannabis or anything else, and everyone that comes to our meetings has a valid perspective on their experience with weed. We may smoke like connoisseurs and we may call ourselves connoisseurs but that doesn’t mean a good dog gammed thing other than that we are serious about our quality cannabis and the enhanced experiences we have as a result.
